Mineralogy and Petrology of Stardust Particles Extracted from the Walls

چکیده
Introduction: Since the return to Earth of the Wild 2 comet samples by the Stardust mission, most of the studies have been performed on terminal particles located at the end of the deceleration tracks. However, the major fraction of the cometary material is unevenly distributed along the track walls [1,2]. Particles within samples extracted from the walls show strong collectinduced thermal alteration but their study remains important to understand the physical and chemical nature of the Wild 2 material. The aim of this work is to investigate by transmission electron microscope (TEM) the mineralogy and petrology of a sample extracted from the wall of track 80.

Mineralogy and Petrology of Stardust Particles Encased in the Aerogel of Track
Introduction: Stardust returned to Earth samples from comet Wild 2. Until now most of the studies have been performed on terminal particles located at the end of the deceleration tracks. However, synchrotron X-ray fluorescence studies showed that a significant fraction of the cometary material is unevenly distributed along the tracks [1-2]. Here we present results of a transmission electron mic...
متن کاملFine Grained Material in Wild 2 in Interaction with the Stardust
Introduction: The hypervelocity impacts of comet particles at 6.1 km/s have left tracks in the Stardust aerogel. The terminal particles are usually coarse grained minerals but abundant material is also present along the track walls as illustrated by synchrotron X-rays fluorescence spectroscopy [1]. This configuration suggests that the Wild 2 particles are made of poorly cohesive assemblages tha...
متن کاملDiscovery of Presolar Sic from Comet Wild-2
Introduction The preliminary examination of Stardust samples has yielded a number of surprising findings, such as the presence of large refractory mineral grains, including materials resembling CAIs, chondrules, and AOA fragments [1-3]. Furthermore, intact organics and fine grained materials are unexpectedly rare in Stardust tracks [4,5]. The fact that intact fine grained materials are uncommon...
متن کاملChemical and Mineralogical Analysis of an Extraterrestrial Particle in Aerogel
Introduction: The NASA Stardust mission is expected to collect in low-density, silica aerogel more than 1,000 dust particles >10 μm in size from the dust coma surrounding Comet Wild-2. It is planned that Stardust will return these samples to Earth early in 2006. Removal of each particle from the aerogel increases the possibility of contamination or loss, thus we are developing a facility to per...
متن کاملIdentification of Stardust Analogs in Aerogel Using Raman Spectroscopy
Introduction: In 2006, NASA’s Stardust mission returned a capsule to Earth with particles collected from the coma of comet 81P/Wild 2. Cometary particles were collected by impact into low-density silica aerogel at a relative velocity of 6.1 km/s [1]. Upon impacting the aerogel, particles left behind tracks of melted and compressed aerogel and void space, shedding material along the way. In orde...
